Born in Whitechapel, East London, on 17th September 1996, Ella Purnell Reed Purnell grew up in the adjacent area of Bethnal Green. At a tender age, she got involved in the arts- being at Bethnal Green Montessori, Forest School and City of London School for Girls, and the Young Actors Theatre Islington. She also learnt dance, singing, and acting at one of the most reputed theatre schools in Britain, called Sylvia Young theatre school, where many British actors receive training.

By the time she was 10, she had achieved an early breakthrough in professional theatre, appearing in the West End production of Oliver! She made her film debut at age 14–as the young Ruth in Never Let Me Go (2010)–a career that will progress well beyond youthful parts.
